Anduril: Defense's New AI Backbone

On March 13, 2026, the US Army signed a 10-year contract with Anduril Industries worth up to $20 billion. This is one of the largest AI contracts in defense history — and a clear signal of the direction Pentagon is heading.

What is Anduril?

Anduril was founded in 2017 by Palmer Luckey (founder of Oculus VR) and has become one of the fastest-growing defense technology companies in the US. The company is known for its Lattice AI platform, which integrates drones, sensors, autonomous systems, and command-control into one cohesive network.

What the contract covers

Under the agreement, Anduril will consolidate all current and future commercial solutions — including the Lattice platform with integrated hardware, data, compute infrastructure, and technical support — into one unified, mission-ready capability for the Army's operational and business needs.

The contract (W9128Z-26-D-A001) was issued by Army Contracting Command at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland on March 13, 2026.

The context: Anthropic out, Anduril in

It's worth noting that this contract comes in the same week that the Trump administration blocked Anthropic from Pentagon contracts. The message is clear: AI is central to US defense strategy, but the Pentagon wants companies that don't question military use of the technology.

My take: For CIOs in defense-related industries or companies with public contracts, this is a wake-up call. AI is no longer an experiment in the defense sector — it's core infrastructure, and the market for defense AI is now in the hundreds of billions. The Anduril contract signals that AI-native defense technology is poised to replace traditional defense giants like Raytheon and Lockheed Martin. This is a seismic shift in who wins defense contracts going forward. And it says something broader: those who build AI platforms that can integrate everything from sensors to decision support will capture the market in the enterprise sector generally — not just defense.
