Anthropic Makes 1 Million Token Context Window Generally Available for Claude
Anthropic has officially made the 1 million token context window generally available (GA) for Claude Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 – at standard pricing, without requiring a beta header and without special restrictions. The change rolled out on March 18, 2026.
What Does This Mean in Practice?
Previously, the 1M context window was a limited beta feature with its own rules and additional costs. Now it's standard – all API users get access without sending special headers or paying a surcharge.
Key changes:
- Media cap raised to 600 items (images, files, documents)
- No beta header required
- All previous limits removed
- Standard pricing applies – same token price as shorter contexts
What Can You Do With 1 Million Tokens?
To put it in perspective: 1 million tokens is roughly 750,000 words – more than "War and Peace" and "The Lord of the Rings" combined. In practice this means:
- Analyzing entire codebases in a single request
- Processing hundreds of documents simultaneously
- Reviewing entire contracts, audit reports, or regulatory documents in full
- Running complex agentic reasoning across large datasets
Claude Code Also Gets Updates
In parallel, Anthropic rolled out Claude Code 2.1.76 with MCP elicitation support, new hooks, and improved stability. MCP servers can now request structured input mid-task via interactive dialogs.
CIO Perspective
For organizations with large document archives, complex contracts, or needs for holistic data processing: this is a paradigm shift. You no longer need to chunk documents, lose context between segments, or run multiple API calls to understand relationships across a full dataset.
