Anthropic signs AI safety agreement with Australia
Anthropic and the Australian government have formalized a partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in Canberra. CEO Dario Amodei met with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to mark the agreement, the first signed under Australia's National AI Plan introduced in late 2025.
The collaboration focuses on three core areas. First, AI safety research: Anthropic commits to sharing insights into emerging model capabilities and risks with Australia's AI Safety Institute, including participation in joint safety and security evaluations. Second, economic data: Anthropic will share data from its Economic Index to help the government track AI adoption and its impacts on the economy and workforce. Third, direct investment in Australian research, with AUD $3 million in Claude API credits distributed to four research institutions in genomics, pediatrics, and computing education.
For startups, Anthropic is also launching an Australian API credit program offering up to USD $50,000 to eligible deep-tech companies in drug discovery, climate modeling, and medical diagnostics.
The agreement reflects a broader trend of AI companies engaging with national governments. While global regulatory frameworks remain immature, Anthropic is positioning itself as a partner for responsible AI development, gaining strategic advantages in markets where trust in the AI vendor is critical.
