Anthropic acquires biotech startup Coefficient Bio for $400 million
Anthropic has acquired Coefficient Bio, an AI-driven biotech startup, for approximately $400 million in an all-stock deal, confirmed on April 3, 2026.
Coefficient Bio was only founded eight months ago, but assembled a strong team of former Genentech computational biology researchers. The startup was half-owned by venture firm Dimension.
The small team of fewer than 10 employees will join Anthropic's Healthcare and Life Sciences division, led by Eric Kauderer-Abrams. The acquisition marks a strategic shift: Anthropic no longer wants to simply adapt general-purpose AI models for scientific workflows, but build specialized models for biological research and drug discovery.
Anthropic launched Claude for Life Sciences in October 2025, followed by Claude for Healthcare in January 2026. The Coefficient Bio acquisition is the next step in a clear biotech push.
The deal underscores the extraordinary value placed on specialized AI talent in biotech. Fewer than 10 employees, $400 million.
