Anthropic Cuts Off Claude Subscriptions for Third-Party AI Agents

Anthropic announced a sudden policy change on Friday evening, effective today, Saturday April 4, 2026 at noon PT: Claude Pro and Max subscribers can no longer use their subscriptions to power third-party AI agents like OpenClaw, n8n, and similar tools.

Boris Cherny, Head of Claude Code at Anthropic, confirmed the change on X: "We've been working hard to meet the increase in demand for Claude, and our subscriptions weren't built for the usage patterns of these third-party tools. Capacity is a resource we manage thoughtfully and we are prioritizing our customers using our products and API."

What does this mean in practice? Users running AI agents through third-party tools on a Claude subscription must now either pay for extra "pay-as-you-go" usage or switch to Anthropic's API, which charges per token rather than offering open-ended usage within plan limits. For heavy agentic users, this could mean a significant cost increase from day one.

Claude Team and Enterprise subscribers have not yet been confirmed as affected. Anthropic says it is reaching out to impacted users.

The change signals that Anthropic wants to route heavy agentic usage through the API layer, where it has better visibility and can manage resource allocation. This is not a ban on agentic use of Claude — but the all-you-can-eat buffet for third-party agents is over.
