Microsoft launches Azure Copilot Migration Agent — AI-driven cloud migration
Microsoft made the Azure Copilot Migration Agent publicly available on March 29, 2026. The tool is an AI-driven assistant integrated directly into the Azure portal, designed to accelerate planning and assessment phases of cloud migrations.
The agent offers agentless discovery of VMware environments, automated landing zone creation with Terraform or Bicep templates, and integration with GitHub Copilot for application modernization tasks such as .NET and Java code upgrades.
What makes this tool stand out is its conversational interface. Users can ask migration-related questions, compare strategies, and get ROI insights through natural language prompts. The Azure Migrate Collector companion tool supports offline inventory collection without requiring direct Azure connectivity.
The agentic capabilities are free during the preview phase. Microsoft has not yet confirmed final pricing.
For enterprises still running heavy on-premise infrastructure, this tool could significantly cut migration timelines. The combination of automatic dependency mapping and 6R recommendations addresses a real pain point in enterprise migrations.
