ChatGPT Is Now in Your Car via Apple CarPlay
OpenAI has rolled out ChatGPT to Apple CarPlay. Starting with iOS 26.4, iPhone users can hold voice-based conversations with ChatGPT directly from their car's dashboard, without touching their phone.
The integration follows Apple's new support for "voice-based conversational apps" in CarPlay, and ChatGPT is among the first to adopt this framework. Interaction is strictly voice-based, in line with Apple's road safety requirements. Users can start new conversations, resume ongoing projects, or ask questions entirely hands-free.
Some limitations apply. ChatGPT currently has no access to maps, vehicle information, live location, or car settings, unlike Siri. There is also no wake word, meaning users must manually open the ChatGPT app within the CarPlay interface to begin.
Still, this is a meaningful shift. For the millions of commuters who already use ChatGPT daily, this makes the assistant available in a context where they previously couldn't use it. Competition with Siri, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa in the automotive market just got more intense.
For businesses with field workers or large vehicle fleets, this unlocks new value from existing ChatGPT subscriptions at no additional cost.
