ChatGPT Pro and Business now come with up to $500 a month in API credits
OpenAI gives paying Pro and Business customers free API credits to build apps and agents. The credits expire every month, and only the owner of both accounts can claim them.

OpenAI is starting to give paying ChatGPT Pro and Business customers free credits for its API, up to $500 a month. The credits can be used to build apps and agents, but they expire at the end of each billing period, and only the owner of both the subscription and the API organization can claim them.
OpenAI Developers announced the benefit on X on 28 October 2026 at 23:17 UTC: "Starting today, eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers can claim up to $500 per month in API credits to build apps and agents." OpenAI published the terms in its Help Center and developer documentation, and the benefit appears in the ChatGPT Business release notes dated 28 October.
How the amounts work
The amount follows the subscription. Pro customers get as much in API credits as the tier they pay for:
- Pro 100 gives $100 a month.
- Pro 200 gives $200 a month.
- Pro 500 gives $500 a month.
For ChatGPT Business the amount is counted per paid seat. A Standard seat contributes $20 and a Premium seat $100. The contributions are pooled for the workspace and capped at $500 a month. OpenAI gives its own example: five Standard seats and three Premium seats add up to $400, while ten Standard seats and four Premium seats would add up to $600 but are held at the cap.
Workspaces that pay for a full year upfront receive the whole year's credits at once, capped at $6,000 per year. The first grant is prorated for the time left in the billing period.
Use them or lose them
The credits do not roll over. Whatever is unused when the billing period ends expires. Once the benefit has been activated, new credits arrive automatically at each renewal, as long as the subscription stays eligible and OpenAI keeps offering the benefit. OpenAI says the benefit may change or be removed in the future.
The credits cover paid API Platform usage in the linked organization. OpenAI lists the Responses API, Chat Completions, the Agents API, the Decisions API, GPT-Live and the Realtime API, the Images API and built-in tools such as web search, file search and Code Interpreter. No payment method is needed on the API account while free credits remain. When they run out and no purchased credits are left, requests fail with error code 429.
There are clear exclusions. The credits do not cover Codex usage through API keys, and they do not raise usage limits in ChatGPT or in signed-in Codex. Normal request and token rate limits still apply.
Who can claim them
Not everyone qualifies. Plus, free users, trials and complimentary subscriptions are excluded. Enterprise, Edu and legacy Codex seats are not included either, and a Business workspace that moves to Enterprise loses the link at the end of the billing cycle. The subscription must have been paid and active for at least seven days before the credits can be claimed.
The person activating must own both the ChatGPT subscription or Business workspace and the API organization that receives the credits, and use the same email address on both accounts. For Business, being a workspace member or admin is not enough. One subscription can link to one API organization, and an API organization can have only one such active link. A ChatGPT seat does not give other employees access to the API organization.
OpenAI says availability also depends on which cohorts and countries have the benefit enabled. These sources do not say whether customers in Norway are included from the start.
What it means for leaders
- A free build budget for teams that already pay. A company with several Premium seats in ChatGPT Business can get up to $500 a month to test its own agents against OpenAI's API, without a separate API agreement.
- Choose the API organization carefully. The link is one to one, and the person activating must own both sides. Decide who should own the API organization before someone in the company does it on their own.
- Credits are not cost control. The credits expire every month, and projects that grow move on to normal paid API usage. Track spending in the API Platform and decide in advance whether auto recharge should be on or off.
