Claude Code Users Furious as Quotas Drain in Minutes

Anthropic admits Claude Code users are hitting usage limits "way faster than expected." Developers on Pro and Max subscriptions report that five-hour sessions are being exhausted within an hour or less.

Three factors are converging. Last week Anthropic cut quotas during peak hours, a promotion that doubled off-peak limits expired March 28, and users have discovered cache bugs in Claude Code that can inflate token consumption by 10-20x.

A developer who reverse-engineered the Claude Code binary found two independent bugs that break prompt caching, silently inflating costs. Multiple users confirm that downgrading to version 2.1.34 yields noticeably better usage.

Anthropic does not publish exact usage limits. The Pro plan only promises "at least five times the usage per session compared to our free service." The $100/month Max 5 plan provides no concrete numbers either, making it impossible for developers to plan their workday.

Frustration is running high on Reddit and Discord. "Out of 30 days I get to use Claude 12," writes one Pro subscriber. A Max 5 user reports burning through the entire quota in one hour, down from eight hours previously.

For CIOs and engineering leaders, this is a reminder that AI coding tools still come with unpredictable pricing models. Dependency on a single provider without transparent limits is an operational risk.
