Commvault launches a new control layer for secure agentic AI
Commvault came out on April 13 with a more mature answer to a problem many vendors gloss over in the agent wave: how to govern, protect, and recover AI systems once agents start changing data and configurations for real.
The company is introducing three building blocks in Commvault Cloud: Data Activate to prepare approved datasets for AI use, AI Protect to discover agent activity, assess risk, and roll back changes, and AI Studio to build custom agents and workflows with MCP support.
It is an interesting position. Many vendors are trying to sell more agents. Commvault is instead trying to become the control plane for agent operations, with governance, visibility, and recovery as the core story.
For CIOs and security leaders, this matters because agentic AI creates not only new opportunities but also new failure modes. When an agent can mutate state across applications and data, securing the model alone is not enough. You need to trace, stop, and restore the full stack.
