Crimson Desert Developer Apologizes for AI-Generated Art in Final Game
Pearl Abyss, the developer behind the recently launched action RPG Crimson Desert, has confirmed that AI-generated art was used during production and apologized for the assets not being replaced before the game shipped.
Players discovered suspicious assets in the finished game, including blurred faces, unnatural anatomy, and repeating patterns characteristic of generative AI. The findings spread rapidly on Reddit and social media, forcing the developer to break its silence.
In a statement on X, Pearl Abyss wrote: "We sincerely apologize for these oversights. We should have clearly disclosed our use of AI. Our intention has always been for any such assets to be replaced."
The company says it is now conducting a "comprehensive audit of all in-game assets" and promises to replace AI-generated content in upcoming patches.
The incident highlights a growing controversy in the games industry over the use of generative AI in AAA productions. While major studios experiment with AI to cut costs and production time, players and indie developers have pushed back strongly. Crimson Desert was already receiving mixed reviews, and the AI revelation has further damaged trust in the project.
The industry now faces a question: will transparency become a new standard, or will AI usage remain a gray area in game development?
