Cursor 3 Flips Coding Upside Down: Agents Write the Code, You Direct
On April 2, 2026, Cursor released version 3. This is not an update. It is a paradigm shift.
Cursor 3 ditches the classic IDE layout. Instead of opening files and writing code line by line, you send goals to a fleet of AI agents working in parallel. You direct the agents. They write the code.
The interface is built around what they call "agent-first": rather than a code editor with AI assistance, it is an agent orchestration platform with a code editor as a secondary function. Developers define high-level goals, and agents choose their own strategy, tools, and implementation.
This directly challenges Claude Code and OpenAI Codex, both of which operate in asynchronous flows. Cursor 3 runs agents in a live interface where you can follow progress in real time and intervene.
For developers already using Cursor, this is not optional. It is a new workflow. For those who have not tried it, now is a good time to start.
Cursor 3 is available now for existing users.
