Gallup: 57% of U.S. College Students Use AI Weekly, Half Despite Campus Bans
A new study from the Lumina Foundation and Gallup, published April 2, 2026, reveals that more than half (57%) of U.S. college students are using artificial intelligence in their coursework at least weekly, with about one in five using it daily.
Particularly striking is that this widespread adoption occurs even as many institutions actively discourage or prohibit AI use. 42% of students say their school discourages AI use, and 11% say it is outright prohibited. The majority continue using it regardless.
Male students report more frequent AI use than female students, particularly daily use (27% vs. 17%). Students in technology, engineering, and business programs are the most active users compared with other fields.
The study also reveals that the AI revolution is already reshaping educational choices: 42% of bachelor's degree students have reconsidered their major due to AI's impact on the job market, and 16% have already changed their field of study because of it.
The top reasons students cite for using AI are understanding complex material, saving time on assignments, and improving grades.
For educators and employers alike, the message is clear: the next generation of workers is already AI-native, regardless of what institutional policies say.
