Grok 4.6 lands in GitHub Copilot: model choice is now a control issue

What happened

On 14 August 2026 GitHub confirmed that Grok 4.6, xAI’s latest reasoning and coding model, is rolling out in GitHub Copilot. This is not a lab teaser. The model is meant to appear in the picker across Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, Copilot CLI, the Copilot cloud agent, the Copilot app, JetBrains, Xcode and Eclipse.

GitHub says Grok 4.6 is designed for agentic coding and complex multi-step workflows. In internal tests it performed strongly on terminal-based coding tasks in VS Code and Copilot CLI, especially on longer-horizon work that needs sustained reasoning and tool use.

The same day, xAI said Grok 4.6 is live in Copilot for developers who work in VS Code and across GitHub. In the SpaceXAI console the model is priced at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens. GitHub says Copilot usage is billed at provider list pricing under usage-based billing.

Who gets it, and who has to turn it on

Availability covers Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise. The rollout is gradual. If it is missing from the picker, that is expected for now.

For Copilot Business and Enterprise this is an admin decision, not a developer preference. The Grok 4.6 policy is off by default. Administrators must enable it in Copilot settings before the organisation can use the model.

That is the governance point. A frontier model inside Copilot is not another autocomplete. It can read repositories, run CLI commands, and drive cloud agents against the codebase. Policy-off is a deliberate no. Policy-on is a yes to xAI as a sub-processor on the development surface.

What this means for leaders

Most organisations that already bought Copilot still treat model choice as a developer taste. That is no longer enough.

First, cost becomes an operating line, not a seat licence. Usage-based billing at provider list prices means long Grok 4.6 agent sessions can dwarf a flat Copilot seat. CIO and CFO need per-model consumption, not a binary “Copilot is on”. GitHub has also been shipping per-model token breakdowns in the usage report. Use them.

Second, data boundary and residency are CISO questions. Grok 4.6 is xAI. Code, issues, pull requests and terminal context that pass through Copilot may now hit a different vendor than OpenAI, Anthropic or Google. Check the DPA, sub-processor list, and whether regulated repos should enter Copilot agents at all.

Third, agentic coding changes the blast radius. A model that is good at long-horizon tool use is exactly the model that will open more files, run more commands and propose larger diffs. That is useful. It also requires branch policy, required reviews, secret scanning and logging of agent runs.

A board that already approved Copilot has not automatically approved Grok. The Business/Enterprise default-off exists for a reason. Treat it as change control: who approves new models, in which repos, against which budget.

What to do this week

• Confirm whether the Grok 4.6 policy is still off in Copilot Business/Enterprise. Do not assume developers “just see it”.
• Assign an owner: platform/CIO owns the model menu, not each engineer.
• Require a per-model cost alert before enabling the policy. $2/$6 per million tokens is easy to underestimate in agent mode.
• Split repos: open tools and core internal surfaces should not automatically share a model.
• Update the AI-use policy so xAI is named as a possible sub-processor via GitHub, and state which data is forbidden.
• Measure quality, not hype: compare Grok 4.6 with the current default on a few fixed internal tasks before it becomes the default.

This is a distribution story more than a model launch. Grok 4.6 already existed. It now sits in the tool Norwegian developers actually use. Whoever owns the Copilot policy owns the risk.
