World leaders gather in New Delhi to shape global AI governance
The Global AI Future Summit is bringing world leaders together in New Delhi today to discuss a unified international framework for AI safety and the equitable distribution of the technology's benefits.
The summit, taking place on March 26, 2026, represents one of the most ambitious attempts yet to coordinate national AI policy across countries with very different interests. Discussions range from AI safety and deepfakes to autonomous weapons and AI's role in education and agriculture for developing nations.
The timing is no coincidence. The UN Security Council recently addressed AI regulation for the first time, the United States is implementing a federal AI framework to supersede state laws, the EU has already enacted its AI Act, and China operates under its own regulations.
For enterprises and CIOs, this is relevant for two reasons. First, international AI frameworks may affect which models and systems are legally permissible in different markets. Second, the summit signals that regulation is now moving quickly, and organizations not already working on compliance will fall behind.
Representatives from over 80 countries are participating. Outcomes from the summit are expected to set the groundwork for the UN's forthcoming AI convention.
