Google DeepMind Appoints Bridgewater Veteran as Chief Strategy Officer
Google DeepMind has appointed Jasjeet Sekhon as its new Chief Strategy Officer. Sekhon joins from Bridgewater Associates, the world's largest hedge fund, where he served as Chief Scientist. He will work directly with DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis to drive the company's AI innovation and long-term strategic direction.
Sekhon described the move as a moral obligation, saying he feels compelled to help ensure AI is developed responsibly and for the benefit of humanity. The hire signals Google's intent to tighten the link between cutting-edge research and high-level strategy as competition in the AI space intensifies.
DeepMind currently leads several key benchmarks, with Gemini 3.1 Pro topping the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index as of March 2026, tied with GPT-5.4 Pro. The appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the lab, which is also expanding into healthcare AI through its AMIE clinical reasoning system.
Sekhon holds academic credentials in statistics and causal inference from UC Berkeley and Harvard, and is known for bringing rigorous quantitative thinking to complex strategic challenges.
