Google DeepMind wants AI agents held accountable with contracts and reputation systems

Google DeepMind has published a framework for "intelligent delegation" designed to solve one of the biggest problems with AI agents: lack of accountability when they delegate tasks to each other.

The framework introduces verifiable contracts between AI agents and a reputation system that tracks how reliable an agent has been over time. The idea is that an agent should not simply hand off a task to another agent, but that this happens within a verifiable and auditable agreement.

This addresses a fundamental problem in multi-agent systems: when one AI agent delegates to another, it becomes very difficult to trace who made which decisions, and who is responsible if something goes wrong. With contracts and reputation tracking, DeepMind aims to give these systems a form of traceability and trust.

The framework is described in a research paper and has not yet been implemented in any production product, but it clearly signals the direction Google envisions for responsible AI orchestration.

For organizations building their own AI agent fleets, this is already relevant. Questions of accountability, auditability, and control are not just technical challenges — they are legal and compliance issues. DeepMind's framework may become a standard that regulators and auditors will reference.
