Google DeepMind doubles down on Pentagon contracts after internal employee revolt
Google DeepMind recently held an internal all-hands meeting after employees raised critical questions about the company's growing defense contracts. The answer from leadership was clear: Google is leaning more into national security contracts, not less.
According to Business Insider, DeepMind leaders directly addressed concerns by assuring employees that a "robust process" exists to ensure contracts align with Google's AI principles. But the message was unambiguous: military partnerships are a prioritized growth direction.
This is not the first time Google employees have protested defense work. Project Maven in 2018 triggered a petition with over 4,600 signatures and at least 13 resignations in protest. Now history appears to be repeating itself, but this time with leadership that doesn't blink.
Google DeepMind has recently confirmed collaboration with Boston Dynamics to integrate Gemini into robots, and the company is in active negotiations for Pentagon contracts to compete with OpenAI, which is already considering deploying its technology on NATO's unclassified networks.
The tension between idealistic engineers and business realities at Big Tech is not a new story. But in 2026 the stakes are higher than ever, and the AI race for military contracts is accelerating every quarter.
For CIOs and technology leaders, this is a signal that AI vendors' ethical frameworks will increasingly be tested by national security agendas. Consider which vendors you depend on and what dilemmas they will face going forward.
