Google expands Gemini Enterprise with agent platform and long-running agents

Google is escalating the enterprise agent race. At Cloud Next, the company unveiled a broader expansion of Gemini Enterprise, moving it from a productivity assistant into a more complete system for building, governing, and monitoring autonomous agents across the business.

What is new

Google is rolling out new Gemini Enterprise capabilities alongside a new Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. The launch includes an upgraded Agent Designer for building workflows with natural language or a visual interface, reusable Skills, long-running agents that can work for hours or days, and a central Inbox to track status, errors, and approvals. Google is also adding Projects and Canvas for shared team workflows, integrations across both Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, and governance layers such as Agent Identity, Agent Registry, and Agent Gateway. The new features will roll out to customers over the coming months.

Why this matters

This matters because enterprise AI is becoming less about chatbots and more about governed workflows. Google is trying to own the layer where agents get identity, access, traceability, and connections to business systems. For CIOs, that means AI platform choice increasingly becomes a governance, integration, and operating-model decision, not just a model-quality decision. The launch also puts more pressure on Microsoft and OpenAI in the fight to become the operating system for enterprise agents.

Source and date validation

The original source is Google’s own Cloud blog post, “What’s new in Gemini Enterprise,” published on April 22, 2026 during Cloud Next. Google also links from that post to the official Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform launch the same day. The publication date is official and within the 48-hour freshness window, so the story qualifies as current.
