Google launches Gemma 4 and raises the stakes in open AI models

Google DeepMind launched Gemma 4 on April 2, a new family of open models built for reasoning, agentic workflows, and local deployment across everything from phones to workstations. Google describes Gemma 4 as its most capable open model family yet, with a strong feature stack: up to 256K context, native function calling and structured JSON output, multimodal image and audio understanding, and support for more than 140 languages.

What makes this launch matter for CIOs is not just benchmark performance. Google is positioning Gemma 4 as a practical option for organizations that want more control over data, infrastructure, and cost. The models are released under Apache 2.0, and Google explicitly ties them to regulated environments, sovereign cloud setups, and local deployments where companies do not want every workload flowing through a closed frontier model.

At the same time, Google is trying to own both ends of the stack. Gemma 4 is built from the same research as Gemini 3, and on Android these models form the basis for the next generation of Gemini Nano. That gives Google a clearer ladder from edge and offline use to full cloud deployment across Vertex AI, Cloud Run, GKE, and TPU infrastructure.

The short version: Gemma 4 is not just another open model release. It is Google’s clearest push yet to make open models credible for production systems, AI agents, and enterprise architecture rather than just demos and hobby projects.
