OpenAI rolls out GPT-5.4 mini to all ChatGPT users
OpenAI has quietly launched GPT-5.4 mini in ChatGPT this week. The new model is now available to free and Go subscribers via the Thinking feature, and serves as a rate-limit fallback for other users.
What's new?
GPT-5.4 mini is the latest iteration in OpenAI's mini series, optimized for speed and efficiency without sacrificing too much of the larger models' performance. The model activates automatically in ChatGPT when users select Thinking mode, or when the system needs to handle high traffic loads.
For paid users, this means continuous access even during peak demand. Enterprise customers retain Auto-routing, which lets the system select the optimal model based on task complexity.
What does this mean for businesses?
For organizations using ChatGPT in their workflows, GPT-5.4 mini means more stable availability. The compact model is faster and cheaper to run, making it attractive for high-volume API use cases such as customer support, document processing, and automated reporting.
The launch comes amid intensifying competition between OpenAI and Anthropic for enterprise customers. Both companies are pushing hard with new capabilities in what Forbes is calling an "agent race" for business accounts.
Detailed performance benchmarks for GPT-5.4 mini have not yet been published by OpenAI.
