OpenAI Rolls Out GPT-5.4 Mini to Free Users

OpenAI is now rolling out GPT-5.4 mini to all free ChatGPT users. The model is available via the Thinking feature and serves as a rate-limit fallback for paid users during peak demand.

GPT-5.4 mini was originally launched on March 17, 2026, as a lighter and more cost-efficient variant of the GPT-5.4 series. It supports a context window exceeding one million tokens and is optimized for high-volume workloads where answer accuracy matters more than minimizing per-token cost.

This marks the first time OpenAI has made a model from the 5.4 generation available for free. The move comes amid intensifying competition with Anthropic, which recently launched Claude Cowork with computer-control capabilities, and Google, which is deepening Gemini integration across marketing platforms.

For paid users, little changes in the short term. Automatic routing continues, and Enterprise customers can retain Auto selection. Free users, however, now gain access to a significantly more capable model than anything previously offered at the free tier.

Analysts view the move as a tactical play to slow churn toward competing free alternatives and broaden the user base ahead of an anticipated IPO.
