HSBC Appoints First Chief AI Officer — A New Trend Among Global Banks
HSBC has appointed David Rice as the bank's first Chief AI Officer, effective April 1, 2026. Rice, who has nearly two decades of experience with HSBC, most recently served as Chief Operating Officer for Corporate and Institutional Banking.
The appointment is part of HSBC's ambition to deploy AI at scale across the entire organization. The bank plans to make generative AI tools available to all staff and equip customer-facing employees with AI assistance for more personalized services.
Group CEO Georges Elhedery emphasized that AI will play an increasingly important role in the bank's future: "Our ambition is to empower colleagues to use AI for personalized customer experiences delivered safely, in real-time, and at scale, while maintaining human judgment and accountability."
The trend is clear: dedicated AI leaders at C-suite level are becoming standard in global financial services. HSBC is not alone — Finastra simultaneously established an AI Centre of Excellence, and Solaris is preparing to become the EU's first fully automated AI bank.
For CIOs in business, the signal is clear: AI strategy now requires dedicated leadership, not just the IT department.
