Lenovo: 70 percent of enterprise AI is uncontrolled

Lenovo has published a new Work Reborn report pointing to a problem many CIOs and CISOs already recognize: AI use inside the organization is growing faster than governance. According to Lenovo, more than 70 percent of employees use AI weekly, and up to one third do so outside IT visibility.

What is new

The report is based on a global survey of 6,000 employees. Lenovo calls the gap an AI execution gap: adoption is accelerating, while control, security and operational governance lag behind. The company points to four consequences: slower ROI, duplicated tool spend, a larger attack surface and weaker visibility into what actually works.

The security angle is the most relevant part. Lenovo says 61 percent of IT leaders report an increase in cybersecurity threats linked to AI, while only 31 percent feel confident in their ability to manage those risks.

Why it matters

This is a vendor report, so the numbers deserve normal skepticism. Still, it hits a real leadership issue: shadow AI is no longer a side effect. It is becoming default behavior in many knowledge organizations.

For CIOs, AI governance cannot be limited to policy and training. Companies need technical visibility, data classification, approved tools, cost control and clear rules for what employees can paste into external models. For CISOs, this is attack-surface management, not innovation theater.
