Meta Acqui-Hires Dreamer Team to Compete in the AI Agent Race
Meta has acqui-hired the entire team behind AI agent startup Dreamer, including co-founder Hugo Barra who previously worked at Meta itself. The team joins Meta Superintelligence Labs under Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang.
Dreamer specialized in autonomous AI agents, and the acquisition is Meta's answer to pressure from OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which have built a solid lead in agent technology. It is unusual to see a former employee return via an acquired startup, but it underscores that Barra and the team had built something worth paying for.
Meta Superintelligence Labs is the company's push toward AGI and advanced AI technology. With Wang at the helm and now the Dreamer team on board, Mark Zuckerberg is signaling that agents are at the core of Meta's AI strategy going forward.
For the industry, this is another sign that agent technology is the hot field of 2026. All the major players are competing for the best minds and the most promising approaches. The price of the Dreamer acquisition has not been disclosed.
Zuckerberg recently stated that AI agents will function as a company's CEO by 2026, and this acquisition is part of that strategy.
