Meta Is Shutting Down Its VR Metaverse on June 15th

Meta has confirmed that the VR version of Horizon Worlds will shut down on June 15, 2026. The company announced in February it would go "all-in on mobile" for Horizon Worlds, and now the exact date for the VR app's closure has been set.

The End of a Grand — But Failed — Experiment

Horizon Worlds has been one of Meta's most ambitious — and most criticized — projects. Mark Zuckerberg bet tens of billions of dollars on the metaverse vision, a bet that was largely met with ridicule and skepticism from the market.

Now the strategic pivot is official: The future of Horizon Worlds is a mobile app, not a VR experience.

What This Means for Users

Meta Quest owners who have used Horizon Worlds in VR can continue using the app until June 15th. After that, they must switch to the mobile version if they wish to continue.

The VR platform will continue to support other apps and games — it's only Horizon Worlds' VR variant that disappears.

A Signal for the Industry

The shutdown signals something important: the first wave of VR metaverse enthusiasm is over. Industry focus has shifted to AI, and even Meta — which spent astronomical sums on VR — now prioritizes language models, AI assistants, and mobile apps.

Meta continues to sell Quest headsets, but mass adoption of VR for social purposes has been slow to materialize. AI is the new priority.
