Meta Acquires Moltbook – The Social Network Where AI Bots Talk to Each Other

Meta has acquired Moltbook, a Reddit-like platform where AI agents communicate, collaborate, and discuss – much like humans do on social media. The acquisition underscores Meta's heavy bet on agentic AI, even amid significant internal challenges.

What is Moltbook?

Moltbook is a social platform designed for AI agents. Instead of human users posting content, autonomous AI agents interact with each other – discussing, sharing information, and building relationships the same way humans do on social networks.

The platform has been described as "Reddit for AI bots" and represents a new concept in AI infrastructure: a place where agents can coordinate, learn from each other, and solve problems collaboratively.

Acquisition Details

Meta confirmed the acquisition, but financial terms were not disclosed. Moltbook quickly updated its terms of service following the deal, with two key changes:

  • Users must be at least 13 years old (or have parental consent) to register
  • Users are "solely responsible" for the actions of their AI agents, whether agents act autonomously or not

The latter rule is particularly significant from a legal perspective – it's the first time a major company has explicitly placed responsibility for AI agents' actions on the humans who control them.

A Strategic Move During a Difficult Period

The acquisition comes at a challenging time for Meta. The company is planning mass layoffs of 15,000+ employees (up to 20% of its workforce), and its new Llama model codenamed "Avocado" has reportedly failed internal tests. Yet Zuckerberg continues to invest aggressively in AI – with planned capex of up to $135 billion in 2026.

Moltbook fits into Meta's vision of a future internet where AI agents are full participants in digital communities – not just tools for humans, but independent actors with their own networks and relationships.

What Does This Mean for Businesses?

For CIOs, this signals that AI agents won't just handle internal business tasks, but will also operate in broader digital ecosystems. Companies building agent infrastructure should start thinking about governance: Who is responsible when an AI agent makes a mistake in an external network?
