Mistral Forge: 'Build Your Own AI' — the French Challenger Goes All-In on Enterprise
Most enterprise AI projects fail not because the technology is bad — they fail because the models don't understand the business. The models are trained on the internet, not on decades of internal documents, workflows, and institutional knowledge.
That's the gap French AI company Mistral is now targeting. At the Nvidia GTC conference in March 2026, they launched Mistral Forge — a platform that lets enterprises build their own AI models, trained from scratch on their own data.
What is Mistral Forge?
Mistral Forge is an enterprise platform where companies and governments can train AI models on their own internal data — not just fine-tune existing models or use RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) to fetch information at runtime.
"What Forge does is it lets enterprises and governments customize AI models for their specific needs," says Elisa Salamanca, Mistral's head of product.
This approach differs significantly from what most competitors offer: OpenAI and Anthropic offer fine-tuning, while most other vendors layer proprietary data on top via RAG. Mistral claims that full from-scratch training yields better results for:
- Non-English languages and domains
- Highly specialized domain knowledge
- Complete data control and vendor independence
Strategic timing at Nvidia GTC
The launch at Nvidia GTC — this year's technology conference focused heavily on AI and agentic models for enterprise — is no coincidence. Mistral is positioning itself clearly as the enterprise choice in a market dominated by OpenAI and Anthropic in the consumer segment.
Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch says the company is on track to surpass $1 billion in annual recurring revenue (ARR) in 2026 — driven precisely by its enterprise focus.
A third way for enterprise AI
For CIOs and technology leaders evaluating AI strategy, Mistral Forge represents a third option: neither buying off-the-shelf (OpenAI/Anthropic) nor building everything from scratch. A platform to train custom models on internal data, with a European vendor and stronger data control.
Particularly relevant for heavily regulated sectors — finance, healthcare, public sector — where sending data to American cloud models may create compliance challenges.
Mistral Forge is available for enterprises now, following the announcement at Nvidia GTC on March 17, 2026.
