OpenAI brings GPT-5.5, Codex and managed agents into Amazon Bedrock

OpenAI and AWS announced on April 28 that OpenAI models, Codex and a new Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents offering powered by OpenAI are launching in limited preview on AWS. This is the first concrete large-scale consequence of OpenAI becoming less tightly bound to the Microsoft/Azure path.

What is new

AWS customers get access to OpenAI’s latest models, including GPT-5.5, through Amazon Bedrock. That means model access through the same Bedrock surface companies already use for IAM, PrivateLink, guardrails, encryption, CloudTrail logging and procurement.

Codex is also coming to Bedrock. OpenAI says more than four million people use Codex every week, and customers will be able to configure Codex to use Bedrock as the provider, starting with Codex CLI, the desktop app and the Visual Studio Code extension.

The third part is Bedrock Managed Agents, powered by OpenAI. AWS describes it as a managed runtime for production-ready agents with inference, memory, skills, identity, logging and governance inside the customer’s AWS environment.

Why it matters

For CIOs, this is not just another model integration. It moves OpenAI closer to where many enterprise workloads already run. If a company already has AWS commitments, a security model and data platforms in place, the path from pilot to production gets shorter.

It also increases pressure on architecture choices. OpenAI can now be bought and governed through several channels: directly, through Azure/Microsoft products and now through AWS Bedrock. That separates model strategy from cloud strategy. Good. But it also means the agent layer needs portability, cost control and logging from day one.

Source and date check

The original source is OpenAI’s own article, "OpenAI models, Codex, and Managed Agents come to AWS", published on April 28, 2026. AWS published its own confirmation on aboutamazon.com the same day, along with a product page for Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents, powered by OpenAI. The story is officially confirmed and within the 48-hour freshness requirement.
