OpenAI Introduces Ads to ChatGPT for Free Users
OpenAI is weeks away from showing advertisements to all users of the free and Go versions of ChatGPT in the United States. The company confirmed the move to Reuters, marking a significant strategic pivot toward advertising revenue.
The reason is straightforward: infrastructure costs are growing faster than revenue. With hundreds of millions of daily users, ChatGPT is one of the world's most visited products, but running the underlying models is extraordinarily expensive. Ads are a way to balance the equation.
OpenAI has reportedly brought in a former Meta executive to lead the advertising initiative, signaling serious ambition. Paid users will not see ads, and the company emphasizes that advertisements will be integrated in a non-intrusive manner.
For the industry, this is an important signal. AI services cannot survive on subscription revenue alone when user bases are this broad. Ad-supported AI is likely the future for mass-market products, just as it became for social media.
Users outside the US will not initially see ads, but an international rollout is expected over time.
