OpenAI rolls out ChatGPT Images 2.0 across all plans
OpenAI is turning image generation into a much broader part of ChatGPT. In new release notes, the company says ChatGPT Images 2.0 is now available across all ChatGPT plans, while paid users also get “images with thinking,” where the model spends extra time reasoning before generating the final image.
What is new
The new model is designed to deliver stronger text rendering inside images, better instruction following, and support for more complex outputs such as infographics, slides, and multiple consistent images in the same style. OpenAI has also published a dedicated system card for the launch, describing how the model combines image generation with reasoning and tool use. That makes this more than a routine image-model refresh. OpenAI is clearly trying to make visual production part of the same workspace as text, code, and agentic workflows.
Why this matters
This matters for CIOs and product teams because generative design is moving from lightweight illustration into a real work tool. As the model gets better at text, layout, and planning, it becomes more relevant for presentations, marketing assets, internal documentation, and rapid prototyping. That lowers the barrier to producing visual content quickly, but it also raises the need for governance around quality, brand consistency, and how synthetic images are used in customer and employee-facing work.
Source and date validation
The original source is OpenAI’s own ChatGPT release notes, which list “ChatGPT Images 2.0 in ChatGPT” with the date April 21, 2026. OpenAI also published a separate “ChatGPT Images 2.0 System Card” for the launch. Both sources are official and within the 48-hour freshness window, so the story qualifies as current.
