OpenAI is reversing course on its e-commerce strategy. The company has announced it is stepping back from "Instant Checkout," the feature that allowed users to purchase products directly from within the ChatGPT interface.

Instant Checkout launched in September 2025 with big ambitions. The concept was straightforward: talk to ChatGPT about what you want to buy, add it to the cart, and pay without leaving the chat. A kind of Amazon competitor embedded inside an AI assistant.

It didn't work well enough. "We've found that the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide," OpenAI said in a blog post.

Going forward, the company is focusing on product discovery rather than direct purchases. The checkout process is moving back to merchants' own websites, while ChatGPT helps users find what they're looking for. Merchants can still build their own apps inside ChatGPT to handle checkout on their end.

The change illustrates a broader challenge for AI companies trying to capture the e-commerce transaction layer. Neither consumers nor merchants are ready to move financial transactions into a chatbot. Product discovery, on the other hand, is something ChatGPT already does naturally — and that's where OpenAI now plans to compete.
