OpenAI Pivots: ChatGPT Shopping Gets a Relaunch After Instant Checkout Failure
OpenAI is rolling out a revamped shopping experience in ChatGPT – and quietly admitting that Instant Checkout didn't work.
The new experience allows users to find products by uploading images or describing what they're looking for, including their budget and preferences. ChatGPT returns more visual results that make it easier to compare products across retailers.
"Under the hood, we've improved speed, relevance and product coverage — so results are more up-to-date and more useful," OpenAI wrote in a blog post.
The change comes after the company quietly wound down Instant Checkout – the feature that let users purchase items from retailers like Etsy, Walmart and Shopify directly inside ChatGPT. Launched last year and billed as the "next step" in AI-enabled commerce, it never scaled. Analysts say OpenAI underestimated the complexity of enabling transactions: difficult merchant onboarding, inaccurate product data, and no support for multi-item carts or loyalty memberships.
"We've found that the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide, so we're allowing merchants to use their own checkout experiences while we focus our efforts on product discovery," OpenAI said.
Merchants can now share their product feeds and promotions directly with ChatGPT. Retailers like Target, Sephora and Nordstrom are already on board. The strategy is clear: don't own the transaction – be the product discovery engine that sends customers to stores.
It's a smart pivot. Instead of competing with Shopify and Amazon for the purchase moment, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as the place where buying decisions are made. That's where AI genuinely adds value – not in processing credit cards.
