GPT-5.4 mini is now free: OpenAI gives all users access to advanced AI reasoning
OpenAI has rolled out GPT-5.4 mini to Free and Go users in ChatGPT – a significant democratization moment for advanced AI reasoning.
What's new?
From March 19, 2026, GPT-5.4 mini is available to all ChatGPT users, including those on the free plan. The model is accessible via the "Thinking" feature in the + menu. For paying users, it serves as a fallback model when GPT-5.4 Thinking hits rate limits.
What is GPT-5.4 mini?
GPT-5.4 mini is a lighter version of OpenAI's latest frontier model GPT-5.4, launched March 5, 2026. It offers:
- Stronger reasoning than older mini models
- Fewer hallucinations compared to GPT-5.2
- Lower cost – designed for high-volume use and API customers
- Access to advanced chain-of-thought thinking
OpenAI positions GPT-5.4 mini as the best model for price-sensitive workflows, without sacrificing too much of the frontier model's capabilities.
What does this mean for CIOs?
For IT leaders and enterprises, this means employees can now access advanced AI reasoning for free – without paying for ChatGPT Plus or Teams. This lowers the barrier for internal AI adoption, but also increases the risk of uncontrolled AI tool usage without company approval (shadow AI).
OpenAI says enterprise customers retain Auto-routing capabilities and can control which model is used in their environments.
The competitive landscape
The launch comes shortly after Anthropic opened Claude Code Channels to Telegram and Discord, and Google launched Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite as a cost-efficient alternative for developers. The race to give all users access to more powerful AI reasoning is escalating rapidly.
