OpenAI Launches GPT-5.4 Mini and Nano – Now Available for Free Users
OpenAI has launched two new models – GPT-5.4 mini and GPT-5.4 nano – bringing near-flagship AI capabilities to free ChatGPT users.
What's New?
GPT-5.4 mini is now available via the Thinking feature for Free and Go users in ChatGPT, and serves as a rate-limit fallback for others. Paid users retain access during high-traffic periods, and enterprise customers can maintain Auto routing.
GPT-5.4 nano is designed for tasks that prioritize speed and cost efficiency – such as data classification and information extraction.
Performance
Both models deliver responses more than twice as fast as their predecessors, according to OpenAI. They are described as "the most capable compact models yet," bringing many of the strengths of GPT-5.4 to faster, more efficient models designed for high-volume workloads.
Strategic Context
The launch follows OpenAI's recent release of GPT-5.3 Codex, GPT-5.3 Codex Spark, and the Codex desktop app – moves that analysts say shift the competitive balance back toward OpenAI on the coding front.
For CIOs and technology leaders, this means free-tier users can now access far more sophisticated AI without paying – lowering the barrier for organizational adoption when testing AI tools.
