OpenAI cuts side projects — goes all-in on coding and enterprise
OpenAI is tightening its strategy. Applications CEO Fidji Simo told employees Monday that the company will prioritize coding and enterprise customers over its broad portfolio of side projects.
Projects that have been deprioritized or put on hold include:
- Sora — the video generation tool mired in deepfake controversy
- Atlas — OpenAI's AI-powered browser, positioned as a Chrome competitor
- Hardware ambitions — smart speakers, cameras, glasses, and lamps
The internal message, according to the Wall Street Journal, was clear: the company needs to "nail" its core business.
What does this mean in practice?
OpenAI has long been criticized for spreading itself too thin. With GPT-5.4 now live and strong competition from Anthropic Claude and Google Gemini, leadership is choosing to concentrate resources.
Coding assistants and enterprise APIs are by far the most profitable segments. ChatGPT Teams and Enterprise subscriptions are growing rapidly, and the Codex series has received excellent reception among developers.
CIO perspective
For IT leaders, this sends a clear signal: OpenAI's priorities are coding, automation, and enterprise integration. The company is letting consumer products mature slowly while generating revenue from enterprise customers.
Whether the side projects will ever come back, or are simply delayed, remains to be seen. But the message is clear: focus beats breadth.
