OpenAI Shuts Down Sora: AI Video App Gets Axed After Six Months
OpenAI confirmed on March 25 that it is discontinuing Sora, the AI video generator launched as a standalone app in September 2025. The announcement came abruptly, just six months after the product went live.
Sora generated enormous buzz when it was first previewed in 2024 as one of the most impressive AI video models ever demonstrated. Clips featuring eerily fluid motion and richly detailed scenes set a new bar for what text-to-video generation could look like.
But the path from demo to viable product proved difficult. Competition from Google and other players has been fierce, and Sora appears not to have built a large enough user base to justify continued operation as a standalone app.
OpenAI has offered no detailed explanation. The company simply says it is "saying goodbye" to Sora, without commenting on whether the underlying technology will survive in some form within ChatGPT or API offerings.
For the industry, it serves as a reminder that even the most hyped AI products are not immune to market realities. Six months is a short time to prove a business model — but a long time to wait for investors expecting returns.
