OpenAI Buys Tech Podcast TBPN and Becomes a Media Company
OpenAI is officially a media company. On April 2, 2026, the company acquired TBPN (Technology Business Programming Network), a daily livestream known as Silicon Valley's favorite podcast, in a move that sent shockwaves through both the tech and media industries.
TBPN was founded in 2024 by Jordi Hays and John Coogan and has quickly become a gathering point for tech founders, investors, and AI enthusiasts. The podcast had previously hosted OpenAI's own CEO Sam Altman as a guest.
OpenAI's chief of applications, Fidji Simo, articulated the purpose: the company wants to create a space for constructive conversation about the changes AI is bringing about. The entire eleven-person TBPN team will join OpenAI.
Financial details were not disclosed, but TBPN was profitable and expected to generate $30 million in revenue in 2026. Editorial independence will be maintained, and broadcasts will continue as normal.
The move is unusual and deliberate. OpenAI isn't just buying a content distribution platform – they're acquiring direct access to the most engaged voices in the tech community. For the company that more than any other defines the AI agenda, this is a strategic positioning as much as a communications investment.
That the world's most valuable AI company (now valued at $852 billion following its latest funding round) is moving into the media space says something about how strategically important the information landscape has become.
