OpenAI Buys TBPN: Silicon Valley's Hottest Tech Show Becomes AI Giant's Media Arm
OpenAI acquired the popular live show TBPN (Technology Business Programming Network) on April 2nd in a deal reportedly worth hundreds of millions of dollars. It is the company's first acquisition of a media company, and the signal is clear: the AI giant wants not just to build models, but to own the conversation around them.
TBPN is a daily live-streamed tech broadcast hosted by entrepreneurs Jordi Hays and John Coogan. The show commands a dedicated following among founders, venture capitalists, and Silicon Valley insiders, streaming live on X, YouTube, and Spotify.
OpenAI's chief of strategy Fidji Simo justified the acquisition by noting that TBPN brings strong editorial instincts and a proven ability to convene influential voices across tech, business, and culture. The company emphasizes that the show will maintain full editorial independence.
CEO Sam Altman, who has previously appeared on TBPN as a guest, said he doesn't expect the hosts to "go any easier on us" following the takeover.
For CIOs and IT leaders, this is a noteworthy move: OpenAI is positioning itself not just as a technology vendor, but as an actor that actively seeks to shape the broader AI debate. This could influence everything from the regulatory agenda to public trust in AI tools in the workplace.
