Penguin Random House sues OpenAI over children's book copyright
Penguin Random House Germany has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in a Munich court. The allegation: ChatGPT reproduces content from the popular German children's book series "Coconut The Little Dragon" by Ingo Siegner with accuracy that is "virtually indistinguishable from the original."
The publisher claims that ChatGPT, after simple user prompts, generated illustrations and text nearly identical to the original material. The chatbot also reportedly offered users instructions for creating print-ready manuscripts with copyright-infringing cover art and guidance for posting on self-publishing platforms.
Penguin Random House argues this is clear evidence that Siegner's books were unlawfully used to train the AI system. The lawsuit follows an unanswered demand from the publisher to remove infringing material from ChatGPT.
The German Publishers and Booksellers Association has welcomed the lawsuit, calling it "an important step towards urgently needed regulation of generative AI." The case joins a growing list of similar lawsuits against OpenAI from authors and publishers worldwide.
For CIOs and technology leaders, this case underscores that copyright risk in AI training is real and escalating. Organizations using generative AI should have clear content usage policies and prepare for tightening regulations.
