Europe's First AI Payment Agent: Santander and Mastercard Complete Historic Transaction
Santander and Mastercard have completed Europe's first live end-to-end payment executed by an AI agent within a regulated banking framework. The transaction, involving the purchase of a t-shirt in Spain, was processed through Santander's live payments infrastructure, confirming that agentic AI is ready for financial services at scale.
Mastercard used its "Agent Pay" solution, launched in mid-2025, which integrates AI agents into the existing financial ecosystem as governed participants. The agent operated within pre-defined consent parameters and completed the transaction without human intervention.
Simultaneously, Visa launched its "Agentic Ready" program in Europe, with 21 issuing partners including Santander. The program focuses on issuer readiness and provides a structured pathway for testing and validating agent-initiated transactions.
Santander had previously conducted controlled pilot agentic commerce transactions in several Latin American markets via the Visa Intelligent Commerce (VIC) platform, where AI agents purchased books and chocolates on behalf of customers. The Europe test marks the transition from pilot to live regulated environment.
For CIOs in financial services, this is a wake-up call: agentic commerce is no longer a future concept. The question is not whether AI agents will shop on behalf of customers, but when your infrastructure will be ready to receive them.
