Shopify Goes All-In on AI Shopping Agents – Building Sidekick and Agentic Commerce
Shopify: AI Agents Will Change Everything in E-Commerce
Shopify's president Harley Finkelstein made it clear at the Upfront Summit in Los Angeles: agentic shopping is the future, and Shopify is positioning itself to own it.
What Is Agentic Commerce?
Agentic commerce is the practice of using AI programs to browse the web and make purchases on a user's behalf – without you needing to click through product pages yourself.
Instead of you searching for workwear, logging in, selecting a size, and checking out – an AI agent does the entire job based on your preferences and delegated authority.
What Shopify Is Building
The company has three parallel initiatives underway:
- Sidekick – an AI assistant for merchants helping with everything from inventory management to marketing
- Support agent – automatically handles customer service and support requests
- Agent protocol – gives AI agents structured access to product data, inventory status, and purchase history so they can shop more precisely
World Verification as the Missing Piece
On the same day, Tools for Humanity (the company behind World/Worldcoin) launched a beta verification tool to confirm there are real humans behind AI shopping agents. This signals the industry is taking legal accountability seriously – who's actually responsible when an agent makes a mistaken purchase?
Relevant for B2B Commerce
For B2B players, this is especially significant: enterprise customers may soon let their AI agents autonomously purchase workwear and safety equipment based on pre-set rules and budgets. A webshop not built for agentic access simply won't show up in agents' results.
This is a stronger argument than ever for structured product data, open APIs, and machine-readable product catalogs.
