Wikipedia Bans AI-Generated Content
Wikipedia has announced a ban on AI-generated content in its online encyclopedia. The rule applies to all machine-produced text, with exceptions for translations and minor copy edits.
The decision marks a clear stance in the debate about content quality and source reliability. Wikipedia has always operated with strict requirements for verifiable information, and AI-generated text violates this principle because it cannot be tied to traceable primary sources.
The ban is partly a response to the sharp increase in automatically produced text that has flooded many online platforms over the past year. Reddit has also recently introduced requirements for users to prove they are human, in response to the same problem.
For Wikipedia, the world's largest and most used encyclopedia with over 60 million articles, the integrity of its content is the very foundation of the platform's value. The ban is a principled line in the sand that may set a precedent for other content platforms.
