Yann LeCun raises $1B for new AI startup challenging the transformer architecture
Yann LeCun, Meta's Chief AI Scientist and one of the field's most influential voices, has launched Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI) Labs with a seed round of $1.03 billion. It marks the largest seed round in European history, valuing the company at $3.5 billion.
AMI Labs is working on what LeCun has long advocated: "world models" as an alternative to the transformer architecture dominating today's generative AI. The premise is that a truly intelligent machine must understand how the world works and plan accordingly, rather than simply predicting the next token in a sequence.
LeCun has been a persistent critic of the assumption that transformer-based models like GPT and Claude can be scaled to genuine intelligence. With AMI Labs, he is putting money and reputation behind his own alternative.
For the industry, this means the battle over AI architecture is now wide open. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are betting on scaling transformers. LeCun is betting they are wrong and that the next generation of AI requires a fundamentally different approach.
AMI Labs is headquartered in Europe, and the historic seed round signals that the continent is now a serious contender in the global AI arms race.
