ChatGPT Now Runs in Apple CarPlay – Hands-Free AI in the Car
OpenAI from April 2 rolled out ChatGPT support directly in Apple CarPlay. With iOS 26.4, iPhone users can now start conversations with ChatGPT hands-free while driving.
The integration works through Apple's new CarPlay framework for "voice-based conversational apps," introduced in iOS 26.4. Users can open ChatGPT by tapping its icon on the dashboard, then speak naturally. Siri can also open ChatGPT on command.
There are some clear limitations at launch. ChatGPT cannot control vehicle functions, make calls, navigate, or control other apps on the phone. The screen remains text- and image-free to prevent driver distraction. There is no wake word, so users must tap to start.
Reactions are mixed. Lifehacker reported that ChatGPT hallucinated immediately during their CarPlay test. Mashable describes the experience as limited but promising for future versions.
Apple is already planning to open for Gemini and Claude in Siri through an "Extensions" system in iOS 27, which will make CarPlay a much more flexible AI platform going forward.
