Chinese AI firms are tracking US military movements in real time

The Washington Post revealed today that Chinese companies, some with military ties, are actively selling AI-generated intelligence on US military movements derived from open sources.

Companies like Hangzhou-based MizarVision, founded in 2021, catalog activity at US bases in the Middle East, track naval movements, and identify aircraft and missile defense systems. The tools are marketed commercially and available for purchase.

What makes this particularly alarming is that the information comes from publicly available sources: social media, satellite imagery, and open databases. The AI tools are not secret spy technologies, but sophisticated aggregation tools that extract strategic conclusions from accessible noise.

The House Select Committee on China told The Washington Post: The United States cannot allow the Chinese Communist Party to turn commercial technology into real-time intelligence on American troops.

China has heavily invested in civil-military integration in recent years, expecting civilian tech companies to support military goals. This strategy now yields commercially available surveillance tools with obvious military applications.

For CIOs and security leaders, this underscores that AI-powered open-source intelligence has reached a level where strategic information can be extracted from public data at a scale and speed unthinkable just a few years ago.
