Claude AI Used by Pentagon in War Against Iran
Anthropic's AI model Claude is being used by the US Department of Defense during the ongoing military conflict with Iran. A Pentagon official confirmed this Tuesday during a Senate subcommittee hearing.
The confirmation came as a surprise to many, particularly given the strained relationship between Anthropic and the Pentagon. Anthropic has set strict limits on military use of Claude, specifically requiring that the model not be used for fully autonomous weapons systems or mass domestic surveillance.
These requirements are in direct conflict with agreements that rival OpenAI has signed with the Department of Defense. As a result, the Trump administration blacklisted Anthropic as a supplier in early March, designating it a supply-chain risk.
Anthropic has responded with a lawsuit, accusing the government of violating the company's constitutional rights. Senate Democrats, led by Senator Adam Schiff, are now working on legislation that would codify Anthropic's red lines on autonomous weapons and mass surveillance into law.
The case highlights a growing tension between AI companies and military customers, where fundamental questions about who controls the technology and for what purposes are no longer hypothetical.
