Google Rolls Out Personal Intelligence to All Free Users: AI Search That Knows You
Google has expanded its Personal Intelligence feature to all free users in the United States. From March 17, 2026, the feature is available in AI Mode in Search, the Gemini app, and Gemini in Chrome, no longer limited to paying AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Personal Intelligence allows Google to connect a user's Gmail, Google Photos, purchase history, and travel confirmations to deliver hyper-personalized search responses. The example Google used in the announcement is telling: if you search for a bag to match shoes you recently purchased, the system pulls purchase receipts from Gmail, understands your brand preferences and style details, and delivers a curated recommendation without requiring a website visit.
For e-commerce businesses, this is a turning point. Generic content, such as "top 10" listicles, loses value. What gets rewarded is product data optimization, brand authority, and existing customer relationships.
From a CIO perspective, it is worth noting that the feature is designed with privacy at its core. Google says personal data is used to generate responses but is not stored externally or used for model training. Nevertheless, it raises new questions about privacy and consent, particularly as the feature rolls out globally during 2026.
For businesses with sales into the US market, timing matters: those building product data structures and brand trust now will have an advantage when the feature reaches Europe.
