Google Completes Historic $32 Billion Acquisition of Wiz
Google has this week formally completed the acquisition of cybersecurity company Wiz for $32 billion. This marks the largest acquisition in Google's 27-year history and the biggest-ever purchase of a venture-backed startup in the technology sector.
What Happened
Wiz was founded in 2020 and rapidly grew into one of the world's leading cloud security platforms, specializing in Cloud Security Posture Management (CSPM) — continuous monitoring and securing of cloud infrastructure. The EU granted unconditional antitrust approval in February 2026, clearing the final major regulatory hurdle. The deal closed this week.
What It Means for the Market
Wiz will be integrated into Google Cloud as an independent company, with the goal of positioning GCP as the most secure enterprise cloud platform. Microsoft Azure Defender and AWS Security Hub are the closest competitors — and Google has responded by acquiring the market leader.
For organizations using Google Cloud or evaluating a multicloud strategy, this means one of the market's best security tools will soon be deeply embedded in the platform.
My Take:
This is about who owns the security layer in the cloud. Paying $32 billion for a company founded in 2020 is extraordinary. Google has paid a premium because cloud security is strategically critical infrastructure. CISOs evaluating GCP should note that Wiz technology — previously an additional cost on top of licensing — may soon become a built-in differentiator. This is a strong argument for taking GCP seriously in the next vendor evaluation cycle.
