Google Completes Historic $32 Billion Acquisition of Wiz
Google this week formally completed the acquisition of cybersecurity company Wiz for $32 billion. It is the largest acquisition in Google's 27-year history, and the largest acquisition of a venture-backed startup in technology history.
What Happened
Wiz was founded in 2020 and grew at record speed to become one of the world's leading cloud security platforms. The company specializes in Cloud Security Posture Management (CSPM) — continuous monitoring and securing of cloud infrastructure. EU regulators approved the acquisition without conditions in February 2026, and the transaction was formally completed this week.
What It Means for the Market
Wiz will be integrated into Google Cloud as an independent company. The goal is to position GCP as the most secure enterprise cloud platform. Microsoft Azure Defender and AWS Security Hub are the closest competitors — and now Google is responding by acquiring the market leader.
For Norwegian companies using Google Cloud or considering a multicloud strategy, this means one of the market's best security products will soon be built into the platform.
My take:
This isn't just about Wiz — it's about who owns the security layer in the cloud. $32 billion for a company founded in 2020 is extraordinary. Google paid a premium because cloud security is strategically critical infrastructure, not just a product. CISOs evaluating GCP should take note: Wiz technology was previously an additional cost on top of the license — soon it could become a differentiator included in Google Cloud. For me as a CIO, this is an argument to take GCP seriously in the next vendor evaluation.
